Stem Mixing FAQ

Stem mixing is a mid-way process between mixing and mastering. It assumes that mixing has taken place and that the mix is good but somehow unsatisfying; a final mix can’t be agreed; mix elements may be tastefully treated, but overall the mix doesn’t quite hold up next to commercial competition. After a dialogue with the mix engineer, I’ll request certain stems of instrument/sound/frequency groups that give me the optimum amount of control to make the mix sound as technically good and commercially competitive for the genre as possible.
